Welcome to Superwomen in Wellness, where we sit down with inspiring female founders paving the way in the wellness space.
We chatted with Bailey Jelinski, Founder of MORNINGS and mama-to-be (very soon!). Bailey shares how she’s been caring for her body throughout pregnancy and dishes on the inspiration and meaning behind her herbal adaptogen brand, MORNINGS.
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Bailey, I am 30 years old and reside in Vancouver, BC with my partner Matt. I’m a Sagittarius who loves travel and adventure although I do love curling up on the couch at home with good snacks and a funny movie.
Prior to launching MORNINGS, I worked in PR for several years where my focus was mainly on lifestyle clients. I still do some PR consulting on the side when I have the time!
Do you have any wellness rituals? What are they?
This might sound like an odd wellness ritual but sleep is pivotal for my health and wellness. As I’ve gotten older I’ve really learned how to listen to my body and I came to the realization a number of years ago that I am unable to function without adequate sleep. If I don’t get enough sleep my immune system suffers so sleep is one thing I lean into and embrace. My evening ritual centres around creating a calming environment, I’ve really been enjoying doing slow yoga with incense and candles to prepare my parasympathetic nervous system for bed. If I don’t do yoga I usually wind down by reading in bed. On nights I need a little more help with sleep I use MORNINGS Zzz Remedy which has become a cult sleep remedy amongst our customers.
How does your day typically begin?
I am not a morning person so I usually begin my day around 9am and begin work at 10am. Once I’m up I head to the kitchen and drink a big glass of water and take some vitamins. I am a big breakfast person so this is also when I prepare myself something to eat. It’s usually some variation of fruit and oatmeal or on a good day I will have a fresh loaf of sourdough from a local bakery and I will make avocado toast.
After breakfast I will open up my laptop and begin going through emails and orders, MORNINGS is still a small business and I do the majority of the work on my own, including packing and shipping orders. Around 11:30am, I will make myself an adaptogen latte using MORNINGS Reishi and Ashwagandha. I am obsessed with Reishi right now and our tincture gives off a slightly nutty flavour which makes pairing it with matcha so yummy.
What are your current self-care routines and how do you show up for yourself?
My self-care routine always involves taking my vitamins, eating healthy, exercising and getting at least 8 hours of sleep! Additionally, I take pride in my skin-care routine which I commit to both morning and night.
I show up for myself by listening to my body and being okay with saying no if something doesn’t work for me.
What’s one aspect of your body that’s taken you time to learn to love?
I’ve always had issues with my back, I have a mild case of scoliosis so I don’t have the best posture and I always catch myself slumped over. I’ve been trying to make a conscious effort to really focus on my posture especially when sitting at a desk. More recently I’ve been embracing breathing exercises to relax my shoulders and neck to alleviate tension in my back and I’ve noticed a big difference both mentally and physically.
What inspired you to launch MORNINGS?
I was looking for a way to integrate more herbs into my routine and wasn’t loving the powdered versions I was buying due to the inconvenience of using them and the chalky taste. I began researching and trying liquid herbal extracts and loved how simple they were to consume but soon realized there weren’t many products on the market that appealed to a more lifestyle customer like myself.
Is there a story behind the name MORNINGS?
I chose the name MORNINGS because I believe starting your day with a ritual you love sets you up for a much more fulfilling day. As I mentioned before, I’m not a morning person (although I wish I was!) and choosing MORNINGS as a name was also a cheeky play on my feelings about mornings.
What’s an unexpected use for adaptogens that surprised you or would surprise most people?
Adaptogens don’t only help with internal ailments like mood, stress, anxiety, etc. they can also help with external problems like allergies and skin problems such as eczema.
What’s your superpower?
My superpower is letting stress roll off my back and not carrying it with me into the next day. My dad always says that life is too short to be stressed out and I always try to take that advice.
What’s something special happening in your life right now that you’d be excited to share with our community?
I am currently 9 months pregnant! We are expecting at the end of April and cannot wait.
How has your pregnancy impacted your relationship with yourself and your body?
Pregnancy has shown me how powerful and beautiful a woman’s body is and I am in awe of my body’s ability to adapt and grow a baby. I struggled a lot at the beginning because I had really bad nausea and morning sickness but I trusted my body to do what it needed and I rested as much as I could. My energy levels plummeted and it took me a while to come to terms that I would not be able to maintain my regular life/work schedule but once I let go of my high expectations it allowed me to embrace my pregnancy and be okay with slowing down.
